The whole spectrum of the law
Cannabis is illegal in Denmark, but not every case ends the same way. From a fine to prison, here is the spectrum that applies in Aarhus as everywhere in the country.
Getting caught again
The fine goes up each time: about +50% the second time, double from the third.
Larger amounts
The fine rises with the weight, and from about 100 g of hash it becomes prison.
Driving
THC in your blood while driving means a fine and losing your licence, even days after the high.
Selling or sharing
Passing cannabis to others, even for free, is a criminal offence that can mean prison.
Medical use
Legal on prescription: the medical cannabis scheme is permanent since 1 January 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is weed legal in Aarhus?
No. Cannabis is illegal everywhere in Denmark. A small amount for yourself usually means a fine; selling or sharing means prison.
Does a fine go on my record?
Drug fines are registered, and repeat cases are fined more. Prison sentences for selling can show up on a criminal record that employers may ask for.
I'm an international student. Does this apply to me?
Yes. Danish law applies to everyone in Denmark, whatever the rules are back home. Bringing cannabis into the country is smuggling.
What about CBD and HHC?
Be careful: products with more than 0.2% THC are treated like hash, and HHC and similar products have been banned since 2023.
